When Should I Get an Ultrasound?
We recommend getting an ultrasound shortly after you’ve taken a pregnancy test with positive results. A pregnancy test alone is not enough to verify your pregnancy. That is why it is important to get an ultrasound, so you can know for certain that you have a viable pregnancy.
What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are examinations that use a device to bounce sound waves off of a developing fetus and create an image on a monitor. Ultrasounds can be used to help confirm pregnancy. Instructions concerning your ultrasound will be issued to you by a LifeTalk nurse.
Ultrasounds are performed to:
- Confirm pregnancy
- Detect fetal heartbeat
- Determine fetal age
- Determine due date
- Determine the location of the pregnancy (intrauterine/ectopic)
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the embryo or fetus has begun developing outside of the uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes. Since there is not enough room in the fallopian tubes for pregnancy to fully develop, it can cause serious damage to your body as your pregnancy develops. If we notice during your ultrasound that your pregnancy is developing outside of the uterus, we will refer you for immediate medical assistance.
