Types of Abortion

The two main types of abortion are medication and surgical. Which type of procedure is an option depends on how far along a pregnancy has progressed. You can find this out by having an ultrasound performed.

Medication Abortion (The Abortion Pill)

Medication abortion, or the abortion pill, is taken within the first 10 weeks of the pregnancy. A medication abortion will end a pregnancy by stopping the flow of progesterone to the pregnancy and subsequently inducing labor to remove the fetus through the vagina. This process results in heavy bleeding, severe cramping, and other discomforts. LifeTalk does not provide the abortion pill.

Surgical Abortion

Depending on the progress of the pregnancy and the size of the fetus, there are different types of surgical abortions available. Essentially, surgical abortions involve the use of tools and local anesthesia to open the cervix and remove the fetus. The fetus is removed from the uterus by using forceps or suction. After the procedure ends, women often deal with cramping, bleeding, fever, and additional side effects.

Abortion Risks

As is the case with all medical procedures, abortions come with their share of risks. Here are a few of these risks:

  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy bleeding and cramping
  • Incomplete abortion
  • Cervical tears
  • Uterine perforation
